In 2017, Pueblo/Ute/Genízara creative Maida Branch established a collective of Indigenous and Indo-Hispanic artists. Dubbed Maida Goods, the platform is “an ever-evolving expression of ancestry, homecoming, diaspora forced and chosen, memory learned and lost, reclamation, and preservation,” as she puts it. Maida and her partner, Johnny Ortiz-Concha—who together raise criollo cattle and churro sheep on their New Mexico farm—share the stories of the creators behind the incredible art, pottery, and textiles on offer. She is a certified Native artist with her tribe, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa from North Dakota. Her indigenous family encompasses three tribal communities, Metis (Manitoba), Chippewa and Cree. Rachel’s illustrations can be seen in children’s books and on clothing.

In the 1870s, Brig. Gen. Richard Henry Pratt was a proponent of “Americanizing” indigenous communities and started government boarding schools that mandated cultural assimilation. He also provided art supplies to Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne and Arapaho prisoners of war at Ft. An inevitable aspect of educating non-Native society is disrupting the concept of authenticity; that is, what is considered “authentic” Indian art.
“Indigenous designers are innately more sustainable because we were raised to have a stronger connection to the earth and what it provides. Most of my items are made from upcycled, recycled, or all natural materials, and I am always trying to find ways to reinvent scrap material. We inherently created the idea of ‘no waste’ in common traditional practices like hunting and fishing. I’ll share some specific examples during the lecture, but, in general, for the first time in 500 years, Indigenous communities can control the design of our community.
History books, timelines, and collections can be limiting in their often narrow viewpoints. As many people currently grapple with what it means to be racially and culturally aware and not to appropriate from other cultures, it is vital that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) scholarship is visible. As a people who have been subject to colonization, subjugation, and attempted erasure, too many histories of Indigenous, Native American, and First Nations people are lacking, especially in design.
